Hammond; Nicholas Geoffrey Lemprière Hammond; born 15 November 1907; died 24 March 2001; British scholar of ancient Greece and an operative for the British Special Operations Executive (SOE) in occupied Greece during World War II; studied classics at Fettes College and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge; during World War II, because of his knowledge of the terrain and the languages, he participated in sabotage missions in Greece, Crete, and Albania; in 1944 he was in command of the Allied military mission to the Greek resistance in Thessaly and Macedonia; after the war he became senior tutor at Clare College, Cambridge; in 1954 became headmaster of Clifton College, Bristol; in 1962 became professor of Greek at Bristol University where he stayed until his retirement in 1973)
