  • Information found: (Kagame, Paul; president; born 1957 in Gitarama, Rwanda; grew up in a refugee camp in western Uganda, where he attended school; as a young man he joined the rebel army of Yoweri Museveni; in 1986 he was awarded the post of chief of military intelligence; a year later he and about 8,000 other Uganda-based Tutsi founded the RPF guerrilla army with financial and military support from Museveni; in 1990 he was taking military courses in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, when the RPF invaded Rwanda; when the RPF's leader was killed, he flew back to take over; by the time the RPF took control of the government in early July; he, as vice president and defense minister, remained widely regarded as Rwanda's de facto leader; from the beginning he insisted that reconciliation between Hutu and Tutsi could occur only if those guilty of genocide were brought to justice, and in 1998 he defended his government's executions of the first convicted criminals; in April 2000 legislators and government ministers elected Kagame president of Rwanda)
